Past event
Description
Clare Clark writes historical novels. She researches facts, gaining inspiration from historical events and allowing the past to emerge in scintillating colour.
The novel In the Full Light of the Sun is also based on a true event. Since the 1920s numerous forgeries of paintings by Vincent van Gogh have been in circulation. Clare Clark sets her novel in Berlin and recreates an image of society on the verge of the Second World War. It is a tale of the search for truth, of infatuation and forgery. The art milieu retreats into a frenzied state of excitement. The young art student Emmeline produces imitations of famous artists’ portraits for advertising campaigns and gets involved with some risky acquaintances. The art critic Julius overestimates his own expertise and falls into the trap. The Jewish lawyer Frank desperately tries to remain faithful to his principles. The art dealer Matthias goes the furthest, causing a scandal and turning the others’ lives upside down. It is just before the outbreak of war. Do they all see what they want to see?
